Welcome to our Club Website

The purpose of this website is to provide an overview of the friendly and competitive bowling activities at Bancroft Bowling Greens in Hitchin, Herts. The bowling facilities are owned and provided by North Hertfordshire District Council and operated on their behalf by Hitchin Town Bowls Club.

As part of their agreement of tenure Hitchin Town Bowls Club are obliged to open the use of bowling facilities to the general public.

Hitchin Town Bowls Club was established in 1929 as a Men's club. The Hitchin Ladies club was formed in the 1950's. It is still operating today but now as a Mixed club with a male and female core club membership of around 40 members. All Hitchin Town Bowls Club members are affiliated to Bowls England.

The facilities at Bancroft  also support a much wider usage by around a further 80 public bowlers who are comprised from within a number of local Social Bowling Groups.

The outdoor bowling season starts early May and ends late September. 

During the summer outdoor season Hitchin Town Bowls Club play some 40 to 50 matches against other local affiliated clubs usually on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  In these games affiliated Hitchin Town Bowls Club member bowlers of all abilities are invited to take part.

Competitions within Hitchin Town Bowls Club are open to Club members only. All abilities can enter and this provides much entertainment throughout the bowling season. Hitchin Town Bowls Club members may also enter all the County and National Competitions.

Also during the summer outdoor season the The Social Bowling Groups play inter group games and organise their own Hitchin Midweek Bowls League. 

Most afternoons and evenings in the week sessions are available for social bowling (roll ups), when the game is simply played for fun. This is a good time to improve bowling skills and these sessions are open to anyone who holds a current Bowling Greens Season Ticket or who has purchased the appropriate single session ticket.
